BMW built aircraft engines until the Treaty of Versailles said stop — so in 1923 the engineers pointed their obsession at motorcycles and produced the R32, with the flat-twin 'boxer' layout and shaft drive the brand still builds a century later. That continuity of idea — refine, never abandon — is the most German thing about them.
Motorrad invented the modern adventure bike with the R 80 G/S in 1980, and the GS line has owned the category ever since: the bike people ride around the world when they mean it. Add the S 1000 RR superbike era and you get a marque equally at home on the Autobahn, the Alps, and the road to Ushuaia.
BMW riders are the planners: GPS routes, farkles, packing lists that would shame an expedition. The GS community's rallies and the MOA (BMW Motorcycle Owners of America) make it one of riding's most organized tribes. If you meet someone who's ridden to Prudhoe Bay, odds are it was on a GS.
