Ducati

Bologna's obsession — racing machines that happen to be street legal.

The story

How Ducati happened.

Ducati began in 1926 building radio components; war leveled the factory, and the rebuild pivoted to a clip-on bicycle engine called the Cucciolo — 'puppy.' The puppy grew teeth. Desmodromic valve control, the trellis frame, the L-twin howl: Ducati turned engineering stubbornness into the most romantic brand in motorcycling.

The racing department isn't a side project — it's the point. World Superbike titles by the armful and modern MotoGP dominance feed directly into the street bikes, from the Panigale's track weapons to the Multistrada's do-everything sophistication to the XDiavel's superbike-hearted cruising.

Things to know

Questions we actually get.

Are Ducatis reliable now?
Modern Ducatis are dramatically more dependable than their 90s reputation — the V4 Granturismo even dropped desmo service. Documented maintenance is still everything, which is how we buy them.
What's the deal with desmo service?
Older desmo engines need periodic valve-clearance work by someone who knows them. Priced into ownership, worth it for the character.
First Ducati — which one?
A Monster or Scrambler is the classic entry. The XDiavel is for someone who already knows exactly what they want.
The tribe

Who rides the sign.

Ducatisti are the espresso-and-apex crowd: track day photos, red touchpoints, strong opinions about tire warmers. Desmo Owners Clubs worldwide treat World Ducati Week in Italy as a pilgrimage. It's the closest motorcycling gets to a fashion house with a race team.
